Blunt Facts NFT #1 minted
Learn about marijuana strains with our weekly releases. Launching this week with Moonbow, the most expensive weed in the USA.
Cluutch’s near term goal is to automate the creation and publication of NFTs based on the data on our HTTP API, that is also exposed on Solana via a Switchboard oracle. This week, we created our first NFT in a collection we are calling Blunt Facts. Last week we went into detail about how Moonbow was chosen as the first marijuana strain to highlight. tl;dr: because it is the most expensive in the USA right now.
Using GIMP to make a NFT
We contacted over 20 illustrators asking them if they would be interested in being commissioned to produce the NFT. Only one showed any interest, but we weren’t able to connect. So instead, here’s how we made the piece ourselves.
Take screenshot of strain from WeedMaps.
Removed background using the “Select by Color” tool. It’s better than fuzzy select in this case.
Roughly trace the original on printer paper.
Remove white background (Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel > Edit > Clear)
Use the Erode filter in order to darken the image.
Adjust colors/chroma/saturation/etc of original then superimpose the outline.
We’ll keep trying to find an artist to make future NFTs, but this works for now. And also obviously in the future, a piece made from scratch, instead of modifying and existing image would be preferred.
Rebranding: Blunt Facts
I am apparently not a very original stoner. The two first NFT concepts (Weedies and Tokin Tokens) that I came up with are already being used. But honestly, I’ve never really loved weed pop-culture. It tends to be very juvenile and simplistic. The Cluutch NFT brand should represent the technical thoroughness that has gone into its creation.
Blunt Facts emphasizes the informative nature of the series, while also being a fun play on words.
Automating strain info
The “facts” that we will cover are strain specific attributes. To limit scope, the information should be derived from data that we already have. We crawl popular weed websites every day and collect the following information about each listing.
“tags” is really the only field with any descriptive information about strains. Tags are stored as a semicolon separated string. We wrote a script to generate a summary of all the tags for a given strain. This is what the output looks like for Moonbow.
Each tag gets categorized into one of the following:
Type: Sativa, indica, or hybrid.
Aroma: Smells, colors, textures, etc.
Feeling: Impact on the body or mind.
Other: Anything else.
Next, the percentage of listings that use a tag is calculated, within each category. The most popular tag within each category is recorded as “best”. Not only does this method help generate attributes needed for the NFT, but if applied to all strains, it could serve as the basis for a weed API that provides qualitative strain info like Otreeba.
Choosing a marketplace
Last week, I listed the Cluutch logo on both Holaplex and Burnt. The Holaplex listing didn’t get any bids. The Burnt one sold for a few SOL. That would normally be impressive, but Burnt is devnet only. Moonbow will also be posted on both apps. Next week, I’ll try out Solanart.
